Parent Volunteers

Iowa Heart appreciates each and every parent volunteer!  Below are brief job descriptions for each of the volunteer responsibilities:

Parent Representative - Assist your team's coach in any way he or she requests. This could include filling in for duties that were not taken by others, delegating duties to other paretns, serving as a "role model" parent, or informing the coach or a board member of issues that are brought to your attention.

Coordinate Food/Drink Schedules for the team at tournaments - Each team handles this duty a little differently, but a sample food chart has been included. Feel free to modify the suggestions to best meet the needs of your team. Iowa Heart has found it to be a tremendous help to have "team food and drinks" for the players, coaches, and frequently the families. This ensures that the players have good, nutritious food throughout the day so they are not relying on junk food from the concession stand. As the Food/Drink Coordinator, you will need to look at the number of families on your team and divide the responsibilities accordingly for each tournament (even "home" tournaments).   Items to consider for the food/drink schedule include, but are certainly not limited to: water bottles, hydration drinks, bagels, sandwich materials (meat, cheese, peanut butter, jelly, condiments, buns), granola bars, fruit (grapes, bananas, watermelon chunks, oranges in sections, etc.), veggies, cheese sticks, yogurt or go-gurt, crackers.   **It is also good to remember hand sanitizer, small plates, napkins, plastic utensils, and a trash bag. We need to clean up after ourselves!

Away Tournament Hotel Reservations - In consulation with your team's coach, decide which (if any) tournaments will warrant an overnight hotel stay. The coach might have a hotel preference. If not, choose a hotel that is safe, clean and moderately priced. An indoor pool and free, continental breakfast are always good to things to ask about. Reserve a block of rooms for your Iowa Heart team. Provide all of the information (hotel name, phone number, special room rate information, etc.) to your coach and families so everyone can make their own reservations. **Please note that hotel reservations for President's Day have already been made by the board. See "President's Day" on the website for more information about that particular tournament.

Create Phone Tree - Each team should have a phone tree. Typically it will start and end with the coach. It can have 1 branch (meaning the coach only  makes one phone call to the next person in line) or two branches (meaning the coach calls two different people, who in turn call the next people on their branch). It is critical that all phone numbers for a given family are on the phone tree. It is a caller's responsibility to call the  next person on the list and either talk with a "real" person and pass along the message OR leave messages on every voice mail for a given famiy AND THEN call the next person in line (and follow the same procedure). You are still "it" until you have talked with a person and he or she then has the responsibility of calling the next person in line. The person (or people, if two branches) at the bottom of the phone tree needs to concact the coach so that he/she knows everyone is aware of the message.

Coordinate the Year End Party - This party can be for players and the coach, or players, families and the coach. It can be as simple or as elaborate as the team wants it to be. Keep in mind that every family might be in a different financial position, so something that is moderately priced is usually best. Frequently the coach's meal is covered by the team members and there is often a collection taken for a gift for the coach. This is optional, but a really nice gesture.

Tourney Results - Email the Director of Coaches (szinnel@boone.k12.ia.us) with information about your team's tournament play. Please provide the name of the tournament  and highlights (medals, accomplishments, etc.) by the Monday after a tournament.

Team Photographer - Take photos of your team (group and/or individual) and email them to the Director of Coaches (szinnel@boone.k12.ia.us) for possible inclusion on the website.

Away Tournament Clean Up - Help monitor the benches (where the team sits and frequently leaves their water bottles), the seating area for parents and the team camp. Everyone (players and parents alike) should help with this job before leaving the site. Enlist the help of other parents/players.

Home Tournament Clean Up - All players and parents must stay to complete tasks at the facility. Help monitor the benches (where the team sits and frequently leaves their water bottles), the seating area for parents and the team camp. If Iowa Heart is hosting a tournament, we need to stay until the end, even if our team is no longer playing. Serve as a role model and enlist the help of other parents/players. All tables in the commons needs to be cleaned off, floors need to be swept, and lost and found needs to be collected and given to the Tournament Director.
